So What Are They?

Gas struts use pneumatic technology to open and hold open your boot or tailgate. They are filled with gas at several hundred psi (pounds per square inch- the measure of pressure) to provide the force that lifts and holds the weight that they support. Mineral oil is also inside the device to slow the opening process. The oil and gas is kept inside the strut by a multiple lip seal on the chromed damper rod. An imperfection on the rod can cause wear on the seal and mean that it doesn’t work properly. Eventually the gas and oil will escape, and it will no longer work.

Can You Extend their Usefulness?

By keeping the rod clean and intact, the seal won’t wear down. Avoid anything that might stick or cause stickiness, or anything that might scratch the chrome rod. Simply keep it clean with a soft dry cloth.

How to Replace Them

If you have a gas strut on each side, they should, theoretically wear out at the same time. If they don’t, you should replace both of them at the same time to prevent twisting. SGS Engineering’s tailgate struts are sold individually and the only tools you should need are a flathead screwdriver. It is, however, a two man job- you don’t want to be holding up the boot and trying to replace the strut at the same time. It is unwise to rely on the other gas strut. Make a note of where the piston rod end attaches to the the car, make sure you attach the new strut the same way up.

To remove the old gas strut, lever the screwdriver underneath the metal band that and pull it back. At the same time, pull on the gas strut and it should come off.

You should be able to simply push the ball socket of the new gas strut on to the stud on the car, and it should click into place. Repeat with the other end.

In terms of competition, Mercedes’ main rivals are fellow Germans Audi (owned by Volkswagen) and BMW, who mainly specialise in luxury or mid-market vehicles. It’s fair to say that they don’t have too much competition for road-legal cars, but that’s not the case at all in the highly-competitive field of Formula One, where three teams have engines designed by Mercedes.

Force India, McLaren and Mercedes are the three teams who are using their engines this year, and in the early stages of the F1 season, they have had mixed results. Although all three teams are expected to pose some sort of threat, they’re not expected to top the Constructors’ Championships this year.

Despite being somewhere in the middle engine-wise, all three teams’ vehicles are far-removed from what Mercedes make for showrooms throughout the world. They’re designed mainly to be extremely quick and aerodynamic, arguably the two most important qualities that every F1 car should possess.

While speed is an absolute must for every car destined for the F1 track, comfort isn’t something that comes as standard. In order to keep the car’s aerodynamic qualities intact, the driver has to squeeze into their seat. The best way to use an engine when we want to have good reports consumption / cost and repair / performance is its use of the optimum minimum speed. What does this mean? Approximately 1.700-1.800 rpm for a turbo diesel model ( for new cars, for old ones rise to 2.200 rpm according to the car technical manual on the maximum torque, not to get confused), and 2.500 rpm for gas engines. The fuel intake will be lower and the engine will work on its maximum capacity. A low torque can reduce the time consumption, but has negative effects on the engine and will result in expensive repairs caused by coke deposits on the turbine. No, every random guy who goes with 1.450 rpm doesn’t save up fuel, he will pay the money later on repairs.

Anticipate traffic

Many accelerations will increase the intake, not just for the engine but for the fuel also, especially if you use all that energy to pull the breaks within seconds after. If we manage to see ahead in a situation, for instance if we pay attention to traffic lights we won’t need to accelerate or hit the breaks that often and we will maintain a certain speed, thus the engine won’t burn too much fuel.

Keep the distance

Although it might seem weird, keeping an appropriate distance from the car in front of you will lower the fuel intake, especially within cities. Why?  Because, is you are 2,3 seconds away from the car in front of you you will be able to anticipate the traffic. If you want to be in front all the time, you will use a lot of energy and spend a lot of fuel.

Use the engine break

If you maintain the distance and anticipate the traffic you will easily use the engine break. No, if you get close to a traffic light it is not advised to break the engine and to step the service brake. On the contrary, the engine break should be used all the time, not only when there is snow or ice on the road, or when we go out of town. If you use the engine break you not only save fuel but you also get a better break and use your break pads less.

Performance

The Dodge Dart is a product of the Chrysler-Fiat partnership and has allowed Fiat to earn an ownership increase of 5%. This car achieves 40 miles per gallon, goes from zero to 60 mph in less than 8 seconds, finishes the quarter-mile in less than 16.5 seconds and has a top speed of 130 mph. Not bad for a small, front-wheel 4-door sedan.

The VW GTI, on the other hand, comes with a 200 horsepower turbocharged engine, but doesn’t get nearly the same gas mileage as the Dart at 33 mpg. It gets up and goes from zero to 60 mph in 6 seconds flat, completes the quarter-mile in less than 15 seconds and has a top speed of 141 mph.

Dodge wins for fuel economy, but the GTI takes the trophy for speed.

Another important factor for anybody looking to buy either the Dart or the GTI is the price.
