1. Ford Fiesta 1.25 Zetec L12,795
The Fiesta is at least above average at everything it does. It has an intriguing interior design, excellent ergonomics, a competent if unexceptional drivetraln and a good-looking exterior. The key, though, is that right now it is dynamically without an equal. So for anyone with more than a passing interest in the way a car drives, the Fiesta is the supermini we would recommend over any others. But while the new Ford is narrowly a class beater, it doesn’t reign in every department.
2. Audi A1 1.2 TSI L13,420
Brings a new level of desirability to the class. Refined and pleasant to drive – particularly with any of the petrol engines. The diesel is frugal but doesn’t suit the character of the car. Generally a very polished, complete supermini.
3. Volkswagen Polo 1.4 Match L13,225
The Polo is an accomplished, mature-feeling, spacious supermini, and given its specification ifs competitively priced. It also rides well. If these are your priorities then the Polo is as good as, if not betterthan, any other.
4. Mazda 21.3 TS2 L11,130
The 2 weighs less than its predecessor, and while this pursuit of lightness has brought sacrifices in overall refinement, especially noisesuppresston, the benefits afforded in economy, performance, verveand comfort arecompelling.
5. Skoda Fabia 1.2 701 L11,130
The Fabia is the most spacious supermini around; its also comfortable, practical, well mannered and well screwed together. But spending everyday in this car could leave you wanting a more involving driving experience.
