This might sound as only a rumor, but in 2010 both Porsche and Audi were racing for the chance of getting the right to provide sports car platforms in the future, not only for them, but for the entire Volkswagen Group. The final decision might seem strange, and we don’t want to take something from the Audi. The winner is Porsche; they were chosen for the task of getting great sports car platforms.
Now the question is about time. Rumors are that Porsche’s plans were targeting March 2011 for the platform, this way underpinning the Ferrari 458 competitor. Still, it is all about the timing of Porsche; if the platform is built soon enough, a report from Autocar says that VW intends to build it on the new generation of Audi R8, and also, on the Lamborghini Gallardo. Volkswagen Group thinks that the structure made from aluminum and carbon fiber will be good enough to hold Porsche’s challenger.
The problem is that Porsche might wait until the late 2020 before getting its sports car out of the production line. By that time, the majority of sports cars will certainly be equipped with Porsche’s platforms.
