Bentley’s new boss has confirmed to Auto Express that the firm is weighing up building a luxury SUV, with diesel power also under consideration.
Wolfgang Duerheimer said: “People like the style of driving of an SUV - i’s not only fast, but solid and safe, and we could transfer this into the super-luxury segment. No one is delivering a product like this in the Bentley style. There’s a great oportunity for us”. The German, formerly head of Porsche R&D, was instrumental in launching the Cayenne SUV and sees a similar opportunity: “Bentley is a lot like Porsche, and we know that many of our owners also have an SUV in their garage already”.
Diesel engines are possible, too. “There is also no reason Bentley should be reluctant to bring in a diesel. We were in the same position at Porsche, where feelings were even stronger than at Bentley”. And the boss is bullish on petrol-elecric power: “You can get performance and efficiency. I know how to do it, and we have access to Porsche technology”.
